About Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands -- 74 tropical islands scattered across the Coral Sea at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The town itself is a cheerful strip of cafes, dive shops, and the enormous Airlie Beach Lagoon, but the real draw is always offshore: snorkelling over living coral, sailing to the blindingly white silica sands of Whitehaven Beach, and spotting green sea turtles from a glass-bottom catamaran. If you have one day in the Whitsundays, spend it on the water.

💡
Insider Tip

Marine stingers (jellyfish) are present in Whitsunday waters October-May -- all reputable boat operators provide full-length lycra stinger suits at no extra charge; wear yours the entire time in the water, even at Whitehaven Beach.

Highlights
🏖
Whitehaven Beach
Ranked among the world's best beaches, Whitehaven's 7 km of 98%-pure silica sand swirls into Hill Inlet at low tide -- accessible by day-sail catamaran or seaplane from Airlie Beach in about 45 minutes.
🐠
Great Barrier Reef Snorkel & Dive
Hardy Reef and Bait Reef, accessible by high-speed catamaran (~90 minutes from Airlie), offer some of the most accessible outer-reef snorkelling in Queensland -- coral gardens, reef sharks, and Maori wrasse.
Whitsunday Islands Sailing
Day-sail and overnight charters thread between secluded coves and uninhabited islands -- Hook Island's underwater observatory and Blue Pearl Bay are standouts for first-timers.
🌊
Airlie Beach Lagoon
A free, stinger-safe swimming lagoon right in the town centre -- perfect if you want a swim without committing to a boat trip, with shaded grassy areas and a beachside bar nearby.
🚁
Heart Reef Scenic Helicopter Flight
A 30-minute helicopter flight over the naturally heart-shaped coral formation at the reef is a once-in-a-lifetime aerial view -- departures run from Whitsunday Airport near Shute Harbour.
Local Food & Drink
  • Fresh Whitsunday prawns -- local school prawns and tiger prawns sold cooked-and-ready at the Airlie Beach waterfront, best eaten cold with a lemon wedge.
  • Coral trout -- a prized reef fish pan-fried or grilled, served at waterfront restaurants along the main strip in Airlie Beach.
  • Mango sticky date pudding -- North Queensland's tropical mango season (November-March) turns up in every dessert on local menus, including a rich sticky date variation.
  • Acai bowl with tropical fruit -- a post-snorkel staple at the health-focused cafes along the Airlie Beach esplanade, loaded with local mango, papaya, and passionfruit.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Whitehaven Beach catamaran day trip -- sailing, snorkelling, and Hill Inlet lookout walk included in most full-day packages.
2 Hardy Reef outer-reef snorkel cruise -- high-speed catamaran to the outer Great Barrier Reef with guided snorkel and optional introductory dive.
3 Seaplane over Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach -- a scenic 30-minute flight with a beach landing for a short walk.
4 Jet-ski tour through the Whitsunday Islands -- 2-hour guided waverunner safari between Hayman and Hook Islands.
5 Stand-up paddleboard and kayak tour around Coral Beach -- a calm, guided paddle through mangrove channels with a marine naturalist.
