Ålesund is Norway's Art Nouveau jewel — rebuilt after a 1904 fire in a unified, fanciful style of turrets, spires, and ornament that's unlike anywhere else in the country. Spread across islands at the edge of the fjords, it offers a famous staircase viewpoint over the rooftops, an excellent aquarium, and easy access to the Hjørundfjord and Geiranger scenery. Pretty, compact, and walkable.
Climb (or ride) up to the Mount Aksla viewpoint first for the definitive view of Ålesund's Art Nouveau rooftops and the islands beyond — it's the photo that defines the town, and the walk down through the center is lovely.
