About Aomori

Aomori sits at the northern tip of Honshu where the Tsugaru Strait meets the Pacific, and it punches well above its size for culture and scenery. The city is world-famous for the Nebuta Matsuri, whose massive illuminated parade floats are displayed year-round at the Nebuta Museum Wa-Rasse right on the waterfront. A short day trip inland brings you to Hirosaki, home to one of Japan's most celebrated cherry-blossom castles and the apple orchards that define the region.

Insider Tip

The JR 'Resort Shirakami' scenic train from Aomori runs the coast to Hirosaki with panoramic windows — book the tourist car seat in advance at the JR ticket window near the station, and you ride one of Tohoku's most beautiful rail routes for the price of an ordinary express.

Highlights
🍮
Nebuta Museum Wa-Rasse
A spectacular waterfront museum housing the enormous illuminated Nebuta floats used in Aomori's August festival — vivid warrior figures, some 5 metres tall, viewable year-round within 5 minutes' walk of the pier.
🏰
Hirosaki Castle & Park
About 45 minutes by JR express from Aomori, Hirosaki Castle is one of Japan's few original surviving keeps, ringed by 2,600 cherry trees and a moat — stunning even out of blossom season.
🍎
ASPAM (Aomori Tourism & Industry Promotion Center)
The distinctive triangular skyscraper near the pier houses Aomori products and a panoramic observation deck — a quick stop to stock up on famous Aomori apple juice, cider, and confections.
🐟
Furukawa Fish Market
A 15-minute walk from the terminal, this covered morning market is the place to try tuna, sea urchin, and local scallops fresh from the Tsugaru Strait — stalls open early and are usually done by noon.
🌊
Asamushi Onsen
A low-key hot-spring resort town on Mutsu Bay about 30 minutes by train — a relaxing half-day alternative to Hirosaki, with seafront ryokan baths and a small aquarium.
Local Food & Drink
  • Hotate (scallop) — Mutsu Bay scallops grilled on the half-shell or served raw as sashimi; sold at Furukawa Market.
  • Kaisen-don — a bowl of rice piled with local sea urchin, salmon roe, and tuna from the bay, a specialty at waterfront restaurants.
  • Ringo (apple) products — Aomori grows over half of Japan's apples; try fresh-pressed juice, apple wine, or caramel-apple cider from the ASPAM shop.
  • Senbei-jiru — a Nanbu-region soup of vegetables, chicken, and flat wheat crackers (senbei) simmered until soft, a rustic local comfort dish.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Hirosaki Castle and park day trip — JR express 45 min each way; stroll the moat and browse the old samurai quarter.
2 Nebuta Museum Wa-Rasse with guided float workshop — learn how the massive papier-mache figures are built.
3 Asamushi Onsen half-day — train ride along Mutsu Bay followed by a hot-spring soak and fresh seafood lunch.
4 Towada-Hachimantai National Park tour — alpine lakes and beech forests, about 1.5 hours by bus from the city.
5 Cycling the Aomori Bay waterfront — rental bikes near the terminal for a flat, scenic loop past fish markets and the port.
