About Bodrum

Bodrum is Turkey's most glamorous Aegean resort town — a dazzling arc of white-cube houses tumbling down to a turquoise bay, with the imposing Castle of St Peter standing sentinel between two harbours. Ancient and modern sit comfortably side by side: the site of the original Mausoleum of Halicarnassus (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) is a short walk from the yacht-lined marina and the thumping nightlife of Bar Street, while the clear Aegean just beyond the bay draws divers and sailors from across Europe. A port day here feels generous — there's always one more courtyard, one more viewpoint, and one more glass of raki.

💡
Insider Tip

The Museum of Underwater Archaeology inside Bodrum Castle is free with the castle ticket and is genuinely world-class — do not skip the Bronze Age Uluburun shipwreck hall, which contains the oldest cargo ever raised from the sea. Book tickets online to avoid the morning queue at the gate.

Highlights
🏰
Castle of St Peter (Bodrum Castle)
A 15th-century Knights Hospitaller fortress built largely from Mausoleum stone, housing the Museum of Underwater Archaeology with priceless Bronze Age and Byzantine shipwreck finds — directly at the end of the pier.
🏛
Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
The UNESCO World Heritage ruins of King Mausolus's 4th-century BC tomb — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; the museum on site displays original friezes, and the scale model shows what the 45-metre structure looked like.
Bodrum Marina & Bar Street
Turkey's most famous yacht marina lines the inner harbour with gleaming wooden gulets; Bar Street (Cumhuriyet Caddesi) runs parallel — quiet at noon, buzzing at dusk with cafes and meyhanes.
🏖
Bitez & Ortakent Beaches
Minibuses from the central bus station reach Bitez (7 km) and Ortakent (12 km) — two of the peninsula's best sandy beaches, calmer and less crowded than the bay in front of town.
🏺
Bodrum Old Town & Bazaar
A web of whitewashed lanes behind the marina filled with leather, ceramics, spice vendors, and sponge sellers — the bazaar district between the two harbours is the most atmospheric part of the old town.
Local Food & Drink
  • Balik ekmek — fresh grilled fish (usually mackerel or sea bass) stuffed in crusty bread with onion and rocket, sold from stalls along the marina — a Turkish harbour staple at its best.
  • Manti — tiny hand-pinched Turkish dumplings filled with seasoned lamb, topped with garlicky yogurt and browned butter; order at a lokanta (casual Turkish restaurant) away from the marina for the authentic version.
  • Raki and meze — the classic Turkish evening ritual: small plates of cacik (yogurt-cucumber), stuffed vine leaves, grilled octopus, and white cheese, paired with anise-flavoured raki diluted with ice water (turns cloudy, called 'lion's milk').
  • Simrit bread rings — sesame-encrusted circular bread sold warm from street carts throughout the old town; the perfect snack while exploring the bazaar.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Castle of St Peter and Underwater Archaeology Museum — a half-day self-guided visit to the castle, including the Glass Wreck Hall housing the world's oldest known shipwreck.
2 Bodrum Peninsula gulet cruise — a 3-4 hour morning sail around the bay, stopping at Karaada (Black Island) for the natural thermal springs and a swim in a sea cave.
3 Ephesus day trip — 2.5 hours north by organized excursion to the best-preserved Roman city in the eastern Mediterranean (book tickets in advance; Ephesus has timed entry).
4 Marmaris and Dalyan river trip — full-day excursion east: the Dalyan river boat to the Lycian rock tombs, Iztuzu turtle beach, and the mud baths.
5 Gumbet and Bitez beach day — minibus to the nearest beach coves for paddleboarding, sunbeds, and waterfront seafood.
