Cagliari is the sun-bleached capital of Sardinia, rising in tiers of pale limestone to the walled Castello quarter high above the harbour. Below sit Roman ruins, a buzzing market, and the long city beach of Poetto, while salt pans on the edge of town are dotted pink with flamingos. It's an authentic, less-touristed Italian port with big views and great seafood.
Everything starts right at the pier — walk up into Castello for the bastion views, then drop back down for the San Benedetto market. If you want beach time, Poetto is a quick bus ride and the flamingos are on the way.
