Castries is the gateway to St. Lucia, the lush, mountainous island crowned by the twin volcanic spires of the Pitons. The harbour town itself is small, but a short drive south opens up the rainforest, the drive-in Sulphur Springs volcano, and the postcard fishing village of Soufrière. It's one of the Caribbean's most scenic ports — best spent heading out of town toward the Pitons.
The Pitons and Soufrière are the reason to come, but they're 1.5 hours south of Castries — book a tour or a catamaran rather than improvising, or you'll spend the day in traffic. A coastal sail is the most relaxed way to see the peaks.
