About Celukan Bawang

Celukan Bawang is a small commercial port on Bali's north coast, used by cruise ships as a quieter alternative to the busier Benoa in the south. It offers a different angle on Bali: the north is cooler, less developed, and home to the scuba-diving mecca of Tulamben (site of the USAT Liberty shipwreck), the black-sand beaches of Lovina, and the mountain-lake temples around Bedugul — all far less crowded than the southern resort strip.

💡
Insider Tip

Organise a private car and driver through the ship or a trusted local operator before arrival — taxis are scarce around Celukan Bawang, the port has no pier facilities, and the best sights (Tulamben, Bedugul) are 45–90 minutes away in opposite directions, so advance planning determines how much you see.

Highlights
🤿
USAT Liberty Shipwreck, Tulamben
A 120-metre WWII supply ship lies in 3–30 metres of water just 30 metres from Tulamben beach — one of the world's most accessible wreck dives; snorkelers can see the upper structure in the shallows. About 45 min east of the pier.
🌊
Lovina Beach & Dolphin Sunrise Cruise
Bali's best-known dolphin-watching site: small outrigger boats head out from Lovina's black-sand beach at dawn to watch spinner dolphins play in the Bali Sea — 15 min west of the pier.
🏔
Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, Bedugul
A mist-shrouded lakeside temple sitting directly on the waters of crater lake Bratan at 1,200 m elevation — one of Bali's most photographed sights, 1.5 hours south into the mountains from the pier.
🌺
Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya), Bedugul
Indonesia's largest botanical garden sits in the cool highland air at 1,300 m, with orchid houses, a cactus garden, and forest trails — adjacent to Bedugul and worth combining with Ulun Danu.
🛕
Pura Beji Temple & North Bali Villages
North Bali's rural interior is dotted with elaborately carved temples rarely seen by southern Bali tourists; Pura Beji at Sangsit (15 min from the pier) has exceptional pink coral-stone carvings.
Local Food & Drink
  • Ikan bakar (grilled fish) — freshly caught sea fish grilled over coconut charcoal with sambal; the warungs along Lovina beach serve the best local version.
  • Laklak — a north Balinese rice-flour pancake served with grated coconut and palm sugar; a breakfast staple in Singaraja markets.
  • Sate lilit — Balinese minced fish or pork satay moulded onto lemongrass skewers and grilled; found at any Balinese warung.
  • Jukut ares — a north Bali ceremonial banana-stem curry with pork; rarely found in tourist restaurants but available at local warungs near the port.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 USAT Liberty wreck dive or snorkel at Tulamben — guided by local dive operators.
2 Lovina dolphin-watching sunrise boat trip followed by a hot-spring soak at Air Panas Banjar.

4 North Bali temple trail: Pura Beji, Pura Meduwe Karang (Dutch cyclist carvings), and Gilimanuk coastal villages.
