Cherbourg is Normandy's deep-water gateway — a working French port city whose modest main square belies its extraordinary surroundings. Across a short coach or taxi ride lie the D-Day beaches, the soaring Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, and the Bayeux Tapestry: three of the most moving and historically important sites in Western Europe. The port's own Cite de la Mer oceanographic museum and the glass-roofed Cherbourg shopping precinct give you plenty to do if you stay local.
If you want both the D-Day beaches AND Bayeux, hire a private guide with a car — public transport in rural Normandy is sparse and the two sites are 30 km apart. Book well before your cruise, as port-day guides fill up months in advance in summer.
