Christchurch is New Zealand's South Island gateway -- a gracious garden city still rebuilding after the devastating 2010-11 earthquakes, which paradoxically have produced one of the most inventive urban transformations in the world: shipping-container malls, gap-fill urban gardens, and bold new architecture alongside the restored Gothic Revival Christchurch Cathedral. Ships dock at Lyttelton Harbour, just 12 km south over the Port Hills from the city, connected by a 10-minute road tunnel; the gondola at Dyers Pass gives panoramic views over both the harbour and the Canterbury Plains beyond. Beyond the city, the Banks Peninsula French village of Akaroa and the spectacular Arthur's Pass mountain scenery are easily reachable in a port day.
The free shuttle between Lyttelton Port and Cathedral Square is often the fastest and cheapest way into the city -- but if you only have half a day, stay in Lyttelton itself: the village has excellent cafes, craft breweries (Eruption Brewing), and the Saturday Lyttelton Farmers Market is one of the best in the South Island.
