About Dunedin

Dunedin is New Zealand's Scottish city -- a Victorian and Edwardian streetscape of ornate stone buildings in a harbour at the foot of the Otago Peninsula, where the world's only mainland royal albatross colony nests on the Taiaroa Head clifftops and a colony of yellow-eyed penguins comes ashore each evening. Ships dock at Port Chalmers, 14 km north of the city, and a shuttle connects to the Octagon -- Dunedin's handsome central square -- in 20 minutes. The city's highlight is Larnach Castle, New Zealand's only castle, which broods magnificently on the peninsula ridge above Otago Harbour; the Speight's brewery and the Otago Settlers Museum complete a port day that is rich in history, wildlife, and excellent New Zealand craft beer.

Insider Tip

Book Penguin Place, the Albatross Centre, and Larnach Castle in advance -- all three are strictly limited-numbers and sell out on cruise days; the most common Port Chalmers mistake is arriving without a reservation and finding them full.

Highlights
🦅
Taiaroa Head Royal Albatross Centre
The world's only mainland royal albatross colony -- these birds have a 3-metre wingspan and nest on the clifftop above Otago Harbour; guided tours (bookings essential) bring you to within metres of nesting birds and fledglings. 25 km from Port Chalmers.
🐧
Yellow-Eyed Penguin Colony, Otago Peninsula
The Penguin Place private reserve gives close-up views of the world's rarest penguin species (hoiho) through a network of camouflaged hides -- you can get within 5 metres of nesting birds without disturbing them.
🏰
Larnach Castle
New Zealand's only castle -- an 1871 Victorian mansion on the ridge of the Otago Peninsula with panoramic harbour and ocean views; the ballroom, gardens, and family rooms are open daily; the garden is one of the finest in New Zealand.
🏭
Speight's Brewery Tour
The Pride of the South -- Dunedin's 1876 brewery at the foot of Stuart Street offers daily guided tours through the heritage brewhouse, fermenting rooms, and a tasting session; the Great King Street brewpub is across the road.
🏛
Dunedin Railway Station & Otago Museum
The Flemish Renaissance-style Dunedin Railway Station (1906) is arguably the grandest station building in New Zealand; the Otago Museum next to the Botanic Garden has a world-class natural history and Southern Ocean collection, free to enter.
Local Food & Drink
  • Blue cod from the Foveaux Strait -- the definitive South Island fish, battered and fried at the Carey's Bay Hotel in Port Chalmers or the No.7 Balmac restaurant in Dunedin.
  • Speight's Gold Medal Ale -- brewed in Dunedin since 1876; a malt-driven amber lager that the South Island takes as a point of civic pride; best from a tap at the Speight's Ale House.
  • Bluff oysters (May-August) -- the famous dredge oysters from Foveaux Strait are the most prized in New Zealand; served natural at the Speight's Ale House or Vault 21 in the Octagon when in season.
  • Whitestone cheese from Oamaru -- North Otago's Whitestone creamery produces award-winning aged Cheddars and blue cheeses; sold at supermarkets and delicatessens in Dunedin.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Otago Peninsula loop -- Larnach Castle, Penguin Place yellow-eyed penguins, and the Royal Albatross Centre in a half-day guided tour from Port Chalmers.
2 Dunedin city sights: Railway Station, Speight's brewery tour, and the Baldwin Street hill (world's steepest residential street).
3 Monarch Wildlife Cruise -- a 1.5-hour boat tour around Taiaroa Head spotting albatross, fur seals, sea lions, and little blue penguins from the water.
4 Tunnel Beach walk -- a 30-minute return trail through coastal farmland to a hand-carved tunnel leading to a secluded sea stack beach on the Pacific coast.
5 Oamaru steampunk district and little blue penguin parade (1.5 hours north) -- the heritage stone town famous for its steampunk arts district and a nightly little blue penguin colony parade at the harbour.
