About Hiroshima

Hiroshima carries the weight of history with extraordinary grace: the Peace Memorial Park and the skeletal Atomic Bomb Dome stand as both a solemn memorial and a forward-looking message that this rebuilt, thriving city sends to every visitor. A 15-minute ferry from the mainland brings you to Miyajima Island, where the vermilion torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine appears to float on the tidal flats, and wild deer wander among the shrine pavilions. Few port days in Asia offer such a compressed range of emotion and beauty.

💡
Insider Tip

Visit Miyajima on a tidal calendar: the floating torii is at its most iconic 1-2 hours either side of high tide. Check the tide table at the Miyajima Tourism Association website the night before — high tide at midday is the ideal scenario, and it cycles predictably.

Highlights
🕊
Peace Memorial Park & Atomic Bomb Dome
The Genbaku Dome — the only building preserved near the hypocenter — anchors a park of memorials and the excellent Peace Memorial Museum. Allow at least 90 minutes; audio guides cover every monument in the park.
Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima
The great vermilion torii and shrine pavilions of Miyajima Island (UNESCO World Heritage) are reached by JR ferry from Miyajimaguchi — 45 min by tram from Hiroshima, then an 8-min ferry crossing. At high tide the gate appears to float; at low tide you can walk up to it.
🦌
Momijidani Park & Mt. Misen, Miyajima
Wild Sika deer roam freely across Miyajima's shrine paths and the maple-lined Momijidani (Maple Valley) park. Take the ropeway up Mt. Misen for views across the Seto Inland Sea — on a clear day Shikoku is visible.
🍁
Hiroshima Castle (Carp Castle)
A faithful postwar reconstruction of the 1589 original, housing a museum of feudal-era armour and maps of the old castle town — about 10 minutes by tram from the Peace Park, with a pleasant moat-side walk.
🤘
Okonomimura (Okonomiyaki Village)
A five-story building near Hatchobori tram stop housing 25 tiny restaurants all serving Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki — layered crepes stacked with noodles, cabbage, and egg on a griddle. Pick a stall, sit at the counter, and watch it assembled.
Local Food & Drink
  • Hiroshima-yaki okonomiyaki — the layered (not mixed) version of Japan's savory pancake: thin crepe, mountain of shredded cabbage, pork belly, yakisoba noodles, and a fried egg, painted with sweet Worcestershire sauce.
  • Momiji-manju — maple-leaf-shaped sponge cakes filled with sweet red-bean paste (or custard, chocolate, or cheese); the definitive Miyajima souvenir, made in tiny bakeries along the approach road.
  • Hiroshima oysters (kaki) — the prefecture produces 60% of Japan's oysters; grilled on the half-shell with ponzu, or deep-fried kaki-furai, at waterfront restaurants near the ferry terminal.
  • Lemon-based dishes (Setouchi lemon) — Hiroshima and the Setouchi islands grow most of Japan's lemons; try lemon ramen, lemon cider, or a lemon-salt gyoza at any casual restaurant.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Peace Memorial Museum and Park self-guided tour — the most emotionally resonant half-day in Japan; allow 2-3 hours.
2 Miyajima Island full-day — tram to Miyajimaguchi, ferry across, shrine stroll, deer encounters, Mt. Misen ropeway, and a lunch of grilled oysters before the return ferry.
3 Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden — a feudal castle keep and a compact strolling garden both within the city loop tram, ideal if Miyajima is too full.
4 Hiroshima sake brewery tour — Saijo sake town (30 min by JR express) clusters 8 breweries within a short walk of the station; tasting rooms open daily.
5 Okonomimura lunch — an essential Hiroshima experience best before noon when waits are shorter.
