About Ho Chi Minh City (Phu My)

Ho Chi Minh City — still universally known as Saigon — is Vietnam's engine: a turbocharged, motorbike-filled former French-colonial capital of 9 million people where glass towers rise above 19th-century boulevards, war museums sit beside rooftop bars, and the best banh mi on earth costs less than a dollar. The cruise port of Phu My is 80 km south of the city centre — about 1.5 hours by road — but the city more than rewards the commute. Ben Thanh Market, the War Remnants Museum, the Reunification Palace, and the narrow tube houses of the old quarter pack a full day easily.

💡
Insider Tip

Vung Tau beach town is only 20 km from Phu My port and a much lower-stress alternative to the 1.5-hour HCMC drive — its Back Beach, French villas, and Christ of Vung Tau statue make a pleasant half-day, freeing you to return to the ship comfortably; save HCMC for a full overnight stay on a future trip.

Highlights
🏛
Reunification Palace & Notre-Dame Cathedral
The preserved 1960s presidential palace where the Vietnam War ended on 30 April 1975, with original command rooms intact — 15 min walk from Ben Thanh Market; the pink Notre-Dame Cathedral is nearby on Dong Khoi Street.
🪖
War Remnants Museum
The most affecting museum in Vietnam: a detailed account of the American War (1955–1975) through photographs, captured military hardware, and first-person testimony — sobering and essential; 20 min by taxi from Ben Thanh.
🛒
Ben Thanh Market & Pham Ngu Lao Street Food
The city's most famous covered market — leather goods, silk, and spices by day; the surrounding streets fill with banh mi carts, pho stalls, and fresh spring roll vendors morning to midnight.
🕳
Cu Chi Tunnels
A network of 250 km of underground tunnels dug by Viet Cong guerrillas — visitors crawl through widened sections, see booby traps and underground kitchens; 40 km northwest of HCMC city centre.
Jade Emperor Pagoda (Phuoc Hai Temple)
Phuoc Hai Tu is HCMC's most atmospheric Chinese-Vietnamese temple — a labyrinth of smoky incense, carved deities, and vivid tile murals; 20 min from the city centre and far less visited than the central sights.
Local Food & Drink
  • Banh mi Saigon — the HCMC baguette sandwich is juicier and more ingredient-loaded than the north; the most famous stall is Huynh Hoa on Le Thi Rieng Street.
  • Pho Nam (southern pho) — sweeter, richer, and served with a tray of bean sprouts, basil, and hoisin; very different from Hanoi pho and outstanding from any pho street stall.
  • Hu tieu Nam Vang (Phnom Penh-style noodle soup) — a clear pork broth with rice noodles, prawn, and quail egg; HCMC's underrated breakfast noodle, found at morning market stalls.
  • Fresh spring rolls (goi cuon) with peanut dipping sauce — rice paper rolls packed with prawns, pork, mint, and vermicelli; sold from baskets at Ben Thanh Market perimeter stalls.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Ho Chi Minh City highlights: Reunification Palace, War Remnants Museum, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and Ben Thanh Market.
2 Cu Chi Tunnels half-day combined with a Saigon city tour — the tunnel site is on the way from Phu My if approaching from the north.
3 Mekong Delta boat tour: floating markets, coconut candy workshops, and sampan canal rides (90 km southwest of HCMC).
4 Jade Emperor Pagoda, Cho Lon (Chinatown) temple, and Bach Dang riverfront walking tour.
5 Phu My to Vung Tau beach town stopover — 20 km from the pier, a French-colonial beach resort with a giant Christ statue viewpoint; easier than the full city drive.
