Hualien is the gateway to Taroko Gorge — Taiwan's most spectacular natural sight and arguably one of the finest gorge landscapes in all of Asia. The town itself sits on the Pacific coast of eastern Taiwan, hemmed in by mountains to the west and ocean to the east, with a quiet, provincial feel that makes it a pleasant contrast to Taipei. Cruise ships dock at Hualien port, minutes from town, and most visitors make immediately for Taroko Gorge National Park: a 19-km marble canyon where the Liwu River has carved tunnels, cliffs, and hanging paths through 4,000-metre peaks over the course of 1.3 million years.
Book a Taroko Gorge taxi guide (around TWD 2,000–2,500 for a half-day) rather than a shared bus tour — private guides drive at your pace, stop at the best viewpoints, and can explain the geology and Truku culture in detail; the gorge has limited parking and the private car gets priority access that tour buses cannot always match.
