Hydra is the most beguilingly anachronistic island in the Saronic Gulf — a crescent of neoclassical sea captains' mansions rising above a perfect horseshoe harbour, entirely free of motorised vehicles since 1821. Donkeys and water taxis are the only transport, stone-flagged lanes lead to monasteries and hilltop cannons, and the absence of cars, mopeds, and chain hotels keeps the island in a different century entirely. Ships anchor in the harbour and tender passengers ashore, delivering them directly onto a waterfront that has changed little since Leonard Cohen lived here in the 1960s.
Water taxis (the small wooden boats in the harbour) charge a flat tariff posted at the dock and are the only way to reach coves that are inaccessible on foot — negotiate with the captain for a return pick-up time, and confirm the departure tender schedule back to your ship before committing.
