About Jeju (Seogwipo)

Jeju is South Korea's largest island and its most beloved domestic holiday destination — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of volcanic drama, subtropical coast, and a culture distinct from the mainland. The island is dominated by Hallasan (1,950 m), South Korea's highest mountain, a dormant shield volcano whose national park fills the centre. Around the coast, extraordinary geological formations like Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), a 5,000-year-old tuff crater rising from the sea, and the Manjanggul lava tube cave make Jeju one of the most geologically spectacular ports in East Asia.

💡
Insider Tip

Seongsan Ilchulbong and Manjanggul lava tube are both on the island's east side — combining them in one route (60 km from the pier, then another 15 km between them) is the most efficient use of a Jeju port day; rent a car or pre-book a driver for the day, as the bus network takes twice as long.

Highlights
🌋
Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak)
A dramatic 182-metre tuff crater cone rising from the sea at Jeju's eastern tip — a short steep climb through grass walls to a rim viewpoint that the UNESCO panel called one of the finest volcanic landscapes in the world; 60 km from the pier.
🏔
Hallasan National Park
South Korea's highest mountain (1,950 m) fills Jeju's centre with hiking trails through azalea meadows and crater lake Baengnokdam at the summit; the Eorimok Trail (3.7 km each way to the 1,700 m shelter) is achievable in a port day for fit hikers.
🕳
Manjanggul Lava Tube
One of the world's longest lava tubes (7.4 km), formed 300,000 years ago; 1 km of the illuminated cave is open to visitors — the lava column at the end is 7.6 metres tall and one of the largest of its kind; 30 min from the pier.
🤿
Haenyeo (Sea Women) Diving Demonstration
Jeju's legendary free-diving women (haenyeo) are a UNESCO-listed cultural heritage; demonstrations are held at Seongsan, Udo Island, and the Haenyeo Museum where divers surface with abalone and conch after breath-hold dives.
🌊
Jusangjeolli Cliff & Cheonjeyeon Waterfall
Hexagonal basalt columns stacked like organ pipes on Jeju's southern coast at Jungmun; Cheonjeyeon waterfall nearby falls through a lush subtropical gorge — both are 40 km south of the pier near the Jungmun resort complex.
Local Food & Drink
  • Jeju black pork (heukdwaeji) — pigs raised on Jeju's volcanic pastures have distinctively flavoured dark meat; thick-cut grilled samgyeopsal from a Jeju black pork specialist in Jeju City is the definitive taste of the island.
  • Jeonbok (abalone) porridge — slow-cooked rice porridge with fresh Jeju abalone; the haenyeo diving tradition makes abalone the island's signature seafood.
  • Galchi jorim (braised scabbardfish in spicy sauce) — Jeju's most common fish dish; the scabbardfish caught in local waters is silkier and richer than mainland versions.
  • Hallabong (tangerine) and citrus products — Jeju's volcanic soil and subtropical climate produce exceptional tangerines; fresh juice and hallabong chocolate are the island's most popular souvenirs.
