Kavala is a handsomely underrated port in northern Greece — a lively university city built in amphitheatre formation above a natural bay, its old quarter (Panagia) still wrapped in Byzantine walls and crowned by an intact Ottoman castle and imaret (almshouse). A soaring Roman aqueduct strides across the city from the Byzantine fortress to the modern centre, giving Kavala a grandeur few visitors expect. It also sits within striking distance of Philippi, one of the most significant early Christian sites in Europe, where the Apostle Paul preached and was imprisoned in 49 AD.
Philippi is only 18 km from the port and easily reachable by taxi (round trip around 40 euros, including waiting time) without joining a ship excursion — the site is uncrowded in the morning and the museum ticket is inexpensive; budget 2-3 hours for a thorough visit.
