About Lautoka

Lautoka is Fiji's second city and its busiest commercial port, situated on the northwest coast of Viti Levu in the heart of sugar-cane country. While the town itself is functional rather than picturesque, it sits at the gateway to some of Fiji's most rewarding inland experiences — the orchid-filled Garden of the Sleeping Giant, the lively Nadi markets, and the famous Sabeto mud pools are all within easy reach. The surrounding cane-field countryside, draped in vivid green, makes even the drive into town an experience.

Kava (yaqona) is Fiji's ceremonial drink and the social glue of village life — if offered a bowl during a village tour, accept it with both hands, clap once before drinking, say 'bula', and drain it in one. Refusing is considered rude; the mild, earthy drink is non-alcoholic and perfectly safe.
