About Lifou

Lifou is the largest of the Loyalty Islands and, for many passengers, the South Pacific port call that exceeds all expectations. This raised coral island — technically a living atoll plateau — has no rivers, only one small town (Wé), and almost no traffic, but its sheltered bays of crystalline turquoise water, near-perfect snorkelling reefs, and towering sea cliffs draped in tropical scrub make it one of the most beautiful anchorages in the Pacific. Ships tender ashore to the bay at Wé, and the pace of life here is genuinely unhurried.

💡
Insider Tip

The snorkelling directly off the beach in front of the tender dock is genuinely excellent and completely free — you don't need to pay for an excursion to see reef sharks, rays, and kaleidoscopic reef fish. Bring your own mask and fins and wade straight in from the sand.

Highlights
🤿
Jinek Bay Snorkelling
The bay directly in front of the tender landing is a natural aquarium — incredibly clear water over white sand and coral heads, with parrotfish, rays, and reef sharks visible in the shallows. No boat required.
Chapelle Notre-Dame de Lourdes
A tiny white chapel perched on a cliff edge with sweeping views over the bay; built in 1898 and still used by the local Kanak community. The short walk up from the beach is one of the best viewpoints on the island.
🏖
Luengoni Beach
A 20-minute drive from the tender dock, this sheltered white-sand beach with gin-clear water and a reef just offshore is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the Pacific. Quiet, uncrowded, and free.
🪸
Baie du Santal (Sandalwood Bay)
A sheltered lagoon on the east side of Lifou with exceptional visibility and hard-coral gardens — a favoured spot for snorkel tours and sea kayaking among rock arches and overhangs.
🌊
Sea Caves and Cliff Pools
Lifou's raised coral geology creates dramatic undercut cliffs along the west coast, with natural sea caves and tidal rock pools accessible by local boat tours from Wé.
Local Food & Drink
  • Bougna — a Kanak earth-oven dish of yam, taro, or plantain baked with chicken or prawn in coconut milk inside banana-leaf parcels; the definitive New Caledonian traditional food.
  • Fresh coconut water — sold by locals at the tender dock; perfectly chilled and cut to order.
  • Poisson cru (raw fish salad) — lime-marinated raw tuna stirred through coconut cream; sold at the small waterfront stalls near the jetty.
  • Baguette with local jam — the French colonial influence is alive and well; bakeries in Wé sell fresh baguettes and coconut or passion-fruit jam.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Luengoni Beach half-day — taxi or tour bus to the island's most beautiful beach for swimming and snorkelling.
2 Jinek Bay guided snorkel — join a local guide in the bay in front of the tender dock for reef fish, rays, and sea turtles.
3 Chapel viewpoint walk and Wé village exploration — walkable from the tender dock in under an hour.
4 Sea kayak to the cliff arches — guided kayak along the coast through sea caves and overhangs with a local operator.
5 Baie du Santal snorkel tour — boat transfer to the eastern lagoon for coral-garden dives with superior water clarity.
