About Limassol

Limassol is Cyprus's most energetic city — a confident Mediterranean port with a medieval Crusader castle in its centre, a long beach promenade lined with palms and buzzing cafe culture, and a hinterland of Troodos mountain wine villages producing some of the eastern Mediterranean's most distinctive wines. Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre here in 1191 (and promptly sold the island), and that Crusader heritage lingers in the castle, the old souk-like bazaar, and the hilltop Kolossi Castle visible for miles around. The island's Kourion archaeological site — a Greco-Roman city clinging to a cliff above the sea — is among the finest in the region.

💡
Insider Tip

Kourion's open-air Greco-Roman theatre still hosts summer performances (June through August) — check the schedule before your sailing date and, if one coincides, the evening sunset concert experience is extraordinary; bring a cushion for the stone seats.

Highlights
🏰
Limassol Medieval Castle
The 14th-century castle at the heart of the old city — the very hall where Richard I married in 1191 — now houses the Cyprus Medieval Museum with armour, Byzantine silverware, and icons; a 20-minute walk from the cruise pier.
🏛
Kourion Archaeological Site
20 km west of Limassol, a Greco-Roman city perched dramatically above the sea: a 2nd-century AD mosaic-floored House of Eustolios, a 5,000-seat theatre (still used for performances), and the Temple of Apollo Hylates.
🏯
Kolossi Castle
A compact 15th-century Knights of St John fortress 14 km west of town that controlled Cyprus's famous Commandaria wine production; the three-storey keep is in excellent condition and offers rooftop views across the cane fields.
🍷
Troodos Commandaria Wine Villages
The world's oldest named wine (Commandaria, mentioned by Hesiod) is still produced from Xynisteri and Mavro grapes in mountain villages 35 km north — Omodos and Lofou are the most scenic for a winery visit and lunch.
🏖
Limassol Beach Promenade
A 12-km waterfront promenade of sandy beaches, beach clubs, and waterside tavernas stretching east from the old port — rent a bike from the port area and cycle the length for the easiest possible beach day.
Local Food & Drink
  • Meze — the Cypriot tradition of 20+ small dishes (halloumi, loukaniko sausage, sheftalia grills, hummus, tahini, stuffed vine leaves, grilled fish) served in sequence at a traditional taverna; budget 2 hours and order the full spread.
  • Halloumi fresh from a dairy — the island's famous semi-hard cheese is best eaten warm off the grill or straight from a local dairy (dairia) rather than the packaged export version; look for the traditional brined version with dried mint.
  • Commandaria wine — a rich, amber-coloured dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes by a method unchanged since the Crusades; sip it at a Troodos village winery or order a glass at any traditional restaurant.
  • Kolokasi stew — taro root slow-cooked with pork, celery, and tomato in a clay pot; a distinctly Cypriot dish found at village tavernas in the Limassol hinterland.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Kourion and Kolossi Castle half-day — combine the clifftop Roman site with the Crusader fortress and a winery stop at a local Commandaria producer.
2 Troodos wine trail — a scenic drive through Omodos village (cobbled square, monastery, wine cooperative), with a stop at Platres mountain resort for fresh trout.
3 Paphos UNESCO day trip — 70 km west: the Paphos Archaeological Park (Roman mosaics, Tombs of the Kings) and the sea cave of Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou).
4 Limassol old town walking tour — medieval castle, the renovated old market arcade, the traditional craft shops of the bazaar district, and a waterfront fish lunch.
5 Akrotiri salt lake and flamingos — 10 km southwest, the seasonal salt lake hosts tens of thousands of greater flamingos from November to March; the wildlife trail is free.
