Lisbon tumbles over seven hills above the wide Tagus estuary — a city of pastel facades, rattling yellow trams, hilltop viewpoints, and the mournful strains of fado. The riverside Belém district holds the Age-of-Discovery monuments and the original custard tarts, while the Alfama's tangled lanes and a Moorish castle crown the old town. Sunny, affordable, and soulful, it's a favorite Atlantic port.
If you have a full day, the fairy-tale palaces of Sintra (about 40 minutes out) are spectacular — otherwise stay in town for the Alfama, the castle view, and Belém. Wear good shoes; Lisbon's hills and slick cobbles are no joke.
