Luganville is the second city of Vanuatu, a laid-back town on the south coast of Espiritu Santo — the largest island in the archipelago and one of the most dramatic in the South Pacific. During World War II, Santo was the staging ground for the Allied campaign in the Pacific, and the island's greatest attraction reflects that history: the USS President Coolidge, a 22,000-tonne luxury liner turned troopship that sank intact in 1942 in 60 metres of water, is now one of the world's largest and most accessible wreck dives. Above water, Santo holds miraculous blue-hole springs and the pristine rainforest of the interior.
The Matevulu Blue Hole is beautiful and very close to Luganville, but if you have 4WD access and a longer port day, push an extra hour north to the Nanda Blue Hole — deeper, less visited, and the colour of the water in afternoon light is extraordinary. Combine it with Champagne Beach for one of the best island days in Vanuatu.
