Miyazaki Prefecture occupies the sunny southeast face of Kyushu, sheltered from Pacific typhoons by the Kirishima mountain range, and the result is a subtropical agricultural paradise of mangoes, chicken, and a coastline that generated Japan's first surf culture. Ships dock at Aburatsu Port in Nichinan City, a small fishing harbor backed by a famous mosaic-tiled path at the Udo Jingu shrine cave, while an express bus north reaches Miyazaki City's wide boulevards and the Nichi-nan Coast road between the two ranks among Japan's most beautiful ocean drives.
Udo Jingu's cave shrine asks visitors to pitch small pottery balls (called 'undama') into a cup-shaped hollow in a rock below the shrine — if the ball stays in, good luck follows. Bags of five undama are sold at the shrine gate for ¥100; success rate improves markedly if you under-arm lob from the women's throwing zone (yes, there are separate zones).
