Mystery Island — known locally as Inyeug — is a tiny, uninhabited sandy islet in the Tafea Province of southern Vanuatu, measuring barely a kilometre across. It appears on cruise itineraries as a near-perfect deserted island experience: blinding white sand, shallow turquoise lagoons ringed by reef, palm trees, and almost nothing else. There is no town, no road, and no permanent population — just a handful of villagers from nearby Aneityum Island who set up craft stalls and snorkel hire on days when ships are in. This is as close to a castaway beach day as a cruise gets.
The water is shallow enough for non-swimmers to wade comfortably 50 metres from shore and still see coral and fish below — but the best snorkelling is at the drop-off on the lagoon side, reached by a 5-minute swim from the beach. The local guides know exactly where to go.
