About Pago Pago

Pago Pago (pronounced 'pango pango') is the compact capital of American Samoa, tucked into one of the most dramatically beautiful deep-water harbours in the Pacific — a near-perfect circular bay ringed by sheer jungle-clad peaks that plunge almost vertically to the waterfront. The island is a US territory, which means US dollars, US federal parks, and an American post office surrounded by fa'a Samoa village life. The National Park of American Samoa — one of the least-visited US national parks — spreads across much of Tutuila island's interior and coastline, protecting ancient rainforest and pristine reef.

Insider Tip

Tisa's Barefoot Bar on the south coast of Tutuila is a Pago Pago legend — a cliffside open-air restaurant and bar where the owner serves fresh fish and homemade taro dishes on a terrace above a swimming cove. It's about 20 minutes from the ship by taxi and worth every minute of the drive.

Highlights
🌲
National Park of American Samoa
One of the USA's most remote national parks, protecting ancient Samoan rainforest, coastal mangroves, and coral reefs on Tutuila. The Tuafanua Trail from Vatia village offers jungle hiking with harbour views — spectacular and rarely crowded.
🚡
Mount Alava Aerial Tram (Historic)
The 1.4 km aerial tramway linking Pago Pago to the summit of Mount Alava was a Cold War-era communications relay — even closed, the mountain offers the most dramatic panorama of the harbour and surrounding peaks, reached by trail.
🏛
Jean P. Haydon Museum
A small but well-curated museum of Samoan history and culture housed in a former US naval building on the waterfront — traditional tattooing tools, fine mats, navigation instruments, and colonial-era photographs.
🌊
Vatia Bay and Coastline
A scenic drive or hike east from Pago Pago leads to Vatia — a traditional Samoan village on a bay backed by jungle cliffs and fronted by the best snorkelling on Tutuila, inside the national park boundary.
🏪
Fagatogo Market and Waterfront
The lively central market near the waterfront is the social heart of Pago Pago — fresh fish straight off the trawlers, tropical produce, handwoven items, and local conversation. The adjacent fish market supplies the canneries and retail in equal measure.
Local Food & Drink
  • Palusami — taro leaves packed with coconut cream and onion, baked in an umu earth oven; the defining dish of Samoan cuisine, available at local restaurants and the market.
  • Fresh yellowfin tuna — Pago Pago is one of the Pacific's major tuna-fishing ports; fresh sashimi-grade tuna is available at waterfront stalls and the fish market at remarkably low prices.
  • Fa'apapa — a dense, sweet coconut and flour bread baked on hot coals; a classic Samoan snack sold at the market.
  • Koko Samoa — roasted local cacao made into a thick, earthy hot drink; richer and less sweet than commercial chocolate, found at market stalls and local cafés.
