About Papeete

Papeete is the busy, charismatic capital of French Polynesia, set on the north-west coast of Tahiti against a backdrop of volcanic peaks draped in cloud. While most visitors rush through en route to Bora Bora or Moorea, Papeete rewards those who explore it — the waterfront market (Le Marché) is one of the great South Pacific markets, Point Venus marks the spot where Captain Cook observed the 1769 Transit of Venus, and Tahiti's dramatic black-sand beaches and marae (ancient stone temples) offer a rawer, less polished kind of beauty than the postcard motus. The city has a buzzing French-Polynesian restaurant scene and some of the Pacific's best pearls.

💡
Insider Tip

The roulottes — colourful food trucks that park along Papeete's waterfront every evening — are where locals actually eat dinner. Show up after 6pm (even if your ship is leaving at midnight) for the cheapest, most authentic meal in the city: fresh poisson cru, Chinese-Polynesian chow mein, and Hinano beer at plastic tables beside the lagoon.

Highlights
🛒
Le Marché de Papeete
A vast two-storey covered market that is the beating heart of Papeete — downstairs: tropical produce, fresh fish, flower-sellers draping you in tiare garlands; upstairs: pareos, shell jewellery, black-pearl pieces, woven hats, and monoi oil. Best on Sunday morning when the whole city seems to shop here.
🔭
Point Venus
A broad, palm-fringed black-sand beach headland where Captain Cook set up his telescope in 1769 to observe the Transit of Venus. A historic lighthouse, a small museum, and the dark volcanic sand make it one of Tahiti's most evocative spots, about 10 km east of the port.
🏖
Tahiti's Black-Sand Beaches
The volcanic beaches of Tahiti's north-east coast — Mahina, Taravao, and the beaches near Point Venus — are strikingly beautiful, the dark sand a stark contrast to the turquoise Pacific. Far fewer crowds than the white-sand atolls of the Tuamotus.
🏛
Musée de Tahiti et des Îles
The best museum in French Polynesia, 15 km from Papeete at Punaauia, with superb collections on Polynesian navigation, marae culture, early contact, and the art of tattooing. Set in lush coastal gardens with views of Moorea across the channel.
💎
Black Pearl Shopping
French Polynesia is the world's source of Tahitian black pearls — the lustrous, dark-iridescent pearls found nowhere else. Robert Wan's Pearl Museum near the port is free and educational; the market and certified dealers on Boulevard Pomare are the safest places to buy.
Local Food & Drink
  • Poisson cru à la tahitienne — the national dish: raw tuna marinated in lime juice and stirred through fresh coconut milk with cucumber and tomato; served everywhere from market stalls to fine restaurants.
  • Chevreffes (freshwater prawns) — caught in Tahiti's mountain streams and grilled with garlic butter; a local speciality found at roadside roulottes and restaurants.
  • Ma'a Tahiti (Tahitian feast plate) — at the market or a local restaurant, a feast plate includes fafa (taro leaves in coconut), poisson cru, fe'i (a red mountain banana), and baked breadfruit.
  • Roulotte food trucks — every night along the waterfront, Papeete's famous roulottes (truck-restaurants) serve crêpes, grilled fish, Chinese-Polynesian noodles, and steak-frites to a cheerful local crowd.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Le Marché morning and waterfront walk — start with the market at opening, explore the promenade, and shop for black pearls along Boulevard Pomare.
2 Point Venus and north-east coast drive — taxi or tour to the headland, black-sand beaches, and the Arahoho Blowhole.
3 Tahiti interior 4WD safari — a guided drive into the Fautaua Valley, past marae ruins and waterfalls, up to the Belvedere viewpoint above Papeete.
4 Moorea fast ferry day trip — the 30-minute high-speed ferry to Moorea is one of the great island escapes; combine with a lagoon tour and lunch on Moorea.
5 Musée de Tahiti and Punaauia beach — culture followed by a swim at Tahiti's best western-coast beach, a short taxi from the museum.
