Picton is the South Island ferry terminus -- a small, sun-drenched town at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, ringed by the drowned river valleys and pine-covered ridgelines of the Marlborough Sounds. Ships dock right at the Picton town wharf, a short walk from the Edwin Fox Museum (the world's ninth-oldest surviving wooden ship), the DOC Queen Charlotte Track information centre, and the water-taxi jetty to the remote bays of Endeavour Inlet. Picton is also the gateway to New Zealand's Marlborough wine region -- Blenheim and its world-famous Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are just 28 km south, easily reached by hire car, shuttle, or cycle along the Deb's Trail rail-trail.
The Picton-Blenheim cycle trail (Deb's Trail) is almost entirely flat along the old railway formation -- hire a hybrid bike from Bikeology at the Picton waterfront for NZ$45, cycle to Blenheim (28 km), stop at 2-3 cellar doors, and catch the Blenheim-Picton shuttle bus back with your bike; it is the best-value day out in Marlborough.
