About Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is the main town of São Miguel, the largest of Portugal's mid-Atlantic Azores — a volcanic island of crater lakes, hot springs, hydrangea-lined roads, and tea plantations (Europe's only ones). The cobbled, black-and-white town is pretty, but the magic is inland: the twin blue-and-green lakes of Sete Cidades and the steaming Furnas valley, where stew is cooked by volcanic heat.

💡
Insider Tip

The island's beauty is inland, so pick a direction: Sete Cidades for the storybook lakes, or Furnas for hot springs and stew cooked in the earth. Weather changes fast in the Azores — bring a layer, and an old swimsuit for the iron-rich thermal pools.

Highlights
🌋
Sete Cidades
Twin crater lakes — one blue, one green — in a vast caldera, with a famous ridge-top viewpoint.
♨️
Furnas valley
Bubbling fumaroles and hot springs where locals slow-cook cozido stew buried in the volcanic ground.
🐋
Whale watching
The deep Atlantic around the Azores is one of the world's top spots for whales and dolphins.
🍵
Gorreana tea plantation
The oldest and only tea estate in Europe, free to visit on the green north coast.
♨️
Terra Nostra thermal pool
A warm, iron-rich botanical-garden bathing pool in Furnas — bring an old swimsuit, the water stains.
Local Food & Drink
  • Cozido das Furnas — a meat-and-vegetable stew cooked underground by volcanic heat.
  • Fresh tuna and limpets (lapas) from the Atlantic.
  • Bolo lêvedo — a sweet Azorean muffin-bread.
  • Local pineapple, Gorreana tea, and São Miguel wine.
