About Port Douglas

Port Douglas is a small, sophisticated resort town an hour's drive north of Cairns on the Cook Highway -- a strip of boutique hotels, day-spa cafes, and Four Mile Beach, backed by rainforest-covered mountains of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Ships anchor offshore and tender into the small marina, placing you a short walk from the famous Macrossan Street restaurant strip and the Marina Mirage shopping precinct. Port Douglas is the closest mainland town to the Outer Great Barrier Reef -- some of the most pristine and accessible reef in Queensland departs from the marina -- and the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation are barely an hour north.

💡
Insider Tip

Port Douglas outer-reef boats (Quicksilver, Calypso, Wavelength) depart early -- most sail at 8:30am; if your tender schedule allows, book the reef boat for your first activity and use the afternoon for the Daintree or Mossman Gorge, rather than the reverse.

Highlights
🐠
Quicksilver Reef Tour -- Agincourt Reef
Port Douglas's landmark wave-piercing catamaran sails 90 minutes to the pristine ribbon reefs of Agincourt -- the outer-reef snorkelling here is among the clearest and most biodiverse in Queensland, and a semi-submersible and underwater observatory are included.
🌿
Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation
The world's oldest tropical rainforest (130 million years) begins 50 km north -- drive across the Daintree River cable ferry, walk the Marrdja Botanical Walk boardwalk through mangroves, and reach Cape Tribulation beach where two World Heritage sites meet.
🏖
Four Mile Beach
A long, palm-fringed beach right in town -- stinger-suit swimming October-May, lifeguard-patrolled, with a beachside bar and cafe. Walk north for 30 minutes for total solitude on an immaculate tropical beach.
🌴
Hartley's Crocodile Adventures
Halfway between Cairns and Port Douglas on the Captain Cook Highway, Hartley's offers a crocodile boat cruise through the genuine wetland, feeding shows, and a menagerie of Australian wildlife including koalas and cassowaries.
🦋
Mossman Gorge & Kuku Yalanji Culture
30 minutes south, the Mossman Gorge Centre is the gateway to crystal-clear granite-boulder swimming holes in the Daintree -- the Kuku Yalanji guided Dreamtime walk offers a First Nations perspective on the forest that has no equal in this region.
Local Food & Drink
  • Coral trout at Salsa Bar & Grill -- Macrossan Street's landmark restaurant serves local reef fish in its own wood-fired oven; the coral trout fillet is the menu benchmark.
  • Daintree Chocolate -- the Daintree grows Australia's only commercial cacao; hand-made chocolate bars and truffles from the Rex Creek farm-gate shop (45 min north) are made within metres of where the cacao grows.
  • Tropical fruit smoothie with banana and passionfruit -- the Cook Highway roadside stalls sell Daintree bananas, rambutans, and papayas by the box; the smoothie bars on Macrossan Street blend them fresh.
  • Fresh prawns at the Port Douglas Surf Club -- the beachside surf-life-saving club sells chilled local school prawns and a cold Queensland lager on the Four Mile Beach deck -- the best-value lunch in town.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Quicksilver Agincourt Reef full-day cruise -- outer reef snorkel, semi-sub, introductory dive, and a gourmet reef buffet lunch.
2 Daintree River cruise and Cape Tribulation 4WD tour -- estuarine croc spotting, cable ferry crossing, rainforest boardwalk, and a cape beach walk.
3 Mossman Gorge swimming hole and Kuku Yalanji Dreamtime walk -- a morning in a crystal-clear mountain gorge with cultural interpretation.
4 Low Isles coral cay snorkel day -- a 15-minute boat to a Barrier Reef coral cay 15 km offshore, with a protected lagoon ideal for snorkelling beginners.
5 Daintree cacao and chocolate farm tour -- 45 km north to the Rex Creek farm for a guided tree-to-bar chocolate experience.
