Santa Margherita Ligure is the handsome Ligurian Riviera gateway that most visitors rush through on the way to Portofino — and they miss something wonderful. The town itself is a riot of belle-epoque pastel villas, a palm-tree-lined promenade, painted facades reflected in a calm harbour, and one of the most charming piazzas on the Italian coast. From here, boats and buses reach the fishing village of Portofino (8 km by coastal path or 5 min by boat) and the famous hike to Cinque Terre unfolds to the northwest. Ships typically tender here, adding a scenic harbour approach to an already scenic arrival.
The public ferry (Tigullio service) from the town harbour to Portofino costs about 7-10 euros each way and runs every 30-45 minutes — it is faster and far cheaper than organized excursions. Buy the return ticket at the dock and confirm the last boat time; the walk back from Portofino via the coastal path is beautiful but takes 2 hours and requires reasonable fitness.
