Punta del Este is South America's St. Tropez — a narrow peninsula jutting into the South Atlantic that transforms every January into a playground for Argentine and Brazilian millionaires, and hosts one of the world's most photogenic beaches year-round. The iconic sculpture La Mano (The Hand) emerging from the sand at Playa Brava is the most photographed sight in Uruguay, while the calmer Playa Mansa side faces the sheltered Río de la Plata. Outside peak summer, Punta feels refreshingly open, with excellent seafood, an art-house cinema culture, and the extraordinary Casapueblo castle hotel perched above the cliffs just west of town.
Casapueblo is best at sunset when the building glows terracotta-orange and a sunset ceremony is held at the terrace each evening. Ask your ship whether you have enough time before departure — if you do, it's the single most memorable thing you can see in Punta del Este.
