About Punta Del Este

Punta del Este is South America's St. Tropez — a narrow peninsula jutting into the South Atlantic that transforms every January into a playground for Argentine and Brazilian millionaires, and hosts one of the world's most photogenic beaches year-round. The iconic sculpture La Mano (The Hand) emerging from the sand at Playa Brava is the most photographed sight in Uruguay, while the calmer Playa Mansa side faces the sheltered Río de la Plata. Outside peak summer, Punta feels refreshingly open, with excellent seafood, an art-house cinema culture, and the extraordinary Casapueblo castle hotel perched above the cliffs just west of town.

💡
Insider Tip

Casapueblo is best at sunset when the building glows terracotta-orange and a sunset ceremony is held at the terrace each evening. Ask your ship whether you have enough time before departure — if you do, it's the single most memorable thing you can see in Punta del Este.

Highlights
La Mano (The Hand) — Playa Brava
Mario Irarrázabal's 1982 giant concrete hand emerging from the sand on the Atlantic-facing Playa Brava has become Uruguay's most iconic image. Walk across the peninsula from the tender pier — about 15 minutes. The Atlantic waves here are rougher and not safe for swimming.
🏖
Playa Mansa
The sheltered, calm western beach facing the Río de la Plata, ideal for swimming — lined with sun loungers, beach clubs, and the long promenade of Rambla Lorenzo Batlle Pacheco. Much calmer than Playa Brava.
🎨
Casapueblo — Carlos Páez Vilaró
A whitewashed clifftop castle-hotel 10km west of Punta, sculpted by artist Carlos Páez Vilaró over 40 years into a labyrinth of domed rooms. The museum inside documents his art and his famous survival story; the sunset from the terrace is unmissable.
Punta del Este Marina
One of South America's largest and most glamorous marinas, lined with superyachts, seafood restaurants, and the duty-free shopping strip of Port Complex. The iconic waterfront is also the embarkation point for boat excursions.
🌊
Isla Gorriti
A forested island 15 minutes by boat from the marina with a colonial fort, two quiet beaches, and clear water ideal for snorkelling — one of the few swimmable spots near Punta with Atlantic clarity.
Local Food & Drink
  • Grilled lenguado (flounder) or merluza (hake) at a marina restaurant — Punta's Atlantic seafood is exceptional and the waterfront restaurants serve whole grilled fish simply with lemon.
  • Pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus) — a legacy of Basque and Galician immigration; tentacles braised until tender then dressed with olive oil and smoked paprika.
  • Medio y medio — a local sparkling white wine blended half-and-half with still white wine, served ice-cold and unique to Uruguay's coastal resort culture.
  • Chivito in a marina café — even at a seaside tourist spot, Uruguay's national sandwich is reliably excellent and served with thick-cut fries.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 La Mano beach walk and Playa Mansa swim — a self-guided loop across the peninsula covering both beaches in 2 hours.
2 Casapueblo sunset excursion — a 20-minute taxi to the clifftop castle for the museum, panoramic Atlantic views, and the famous sunset ritual (best for late-departing ships).
3 Boat trip to Isla Gorriti — 30-minute round trip from the marina, with a beach picnic and optional snorkelling in clear water.
4 Laguna del Sauce wildlife tour — a freshwater lagoon 20 minutes inland, rich in birdlife and capybaras, popular for kayaking.
5 José Ignacio day trip — a tiny fishing village turned boutique hideaway 45km east, with the tallest lighthouse in Uruguay and some of the finest beach restaurants on the South Atlantic coast.
