About Puntarenas

Puntarenas, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, is the country's main cruise port -- a launching pad for one of the world's great biodiversity destinations. The port sits on a sliver of land between the Pacific and an estuary, but the real draw is the interior: Manuel Antonio National Park, with its white-sand beaches and three-toed sloths in the beachside trees, is two hours south; the rainforest-draped Carara National Park is 90 minutes; and zip-line and white-water rafting adventures fill every gap in between. Costa Rica's 'pura vida' philosophy -- a genuine national emphasis on happiness and environmental stewardship -- is infectious.

Insider Tip

Hire a bilingual certified naturalist guide for Manuel Antonio -- Costa Rica's guides are licensed and knowledgeable, and a good one will spot a sloth or a basilisk lizard within minutes that most visitors walk right past. Book directly through the national park's official guide association rather than through informal touts at the gate.

Highlights
🦥
Manuel Antonio National Park
Costa Rica's smallest but most visited national park packs an extraordinary amount into a small area: beaches of brilliant white sand, a coral reef viewable by snorkel, and an incredibly dense concentration of wildlife -- three-toed sloths, white-faced capuchins, squirrel monkeys, and scarlet macaws can all be spotted on a single morning walk with a certified naturalist guide.
🌿
Carara National Park & Scarlet Macaws
One hour south of Puntarenas, Carara sits at the transition zone between dry and wet forest -- a biodiversity hotspot and the easiest place in Costa Rica to see scarlet macaws roosting en masse at dawn and dusk, along with American crocodiles in the Rio Tarcoles below the highway bridge.
🤿
Tortuga Island Catamaran Cruise
A full-day catamaran trip to Tortuga Island in the Gulf of Nicoya, with snorkeling over rocky reefs, a beach lunch on the island's white-sand crescent, and an open bar on the sail back -- reliably well-run and a beautiful day on the water.
🎃
Zip-Lining in the Rainforest Canopy
Several established eco-adventure operators run zip-line tours from platforms in the rainforest canopy within 90 minutes of the port -- some combine zip-lining with hanging bridges and rappelling above the treetops.
🐊
Rio Tarcoles Crocodile Safari
The bridge over the Rio Tarcoles on the coastal highway hosts American crocodiles up to 4 metres long that can be viewed from the road or from a flat-bottomed boat tour on the river below -- one of the most surreal wildlife moments accessible in a short time from the port.
Local Food & Drink
  • Gallo pinto -- Costa Rica's national breakfast: black beans and rice cooked together with Lizano sauce, cilantro, and peppers; served at every soda (local diner) and hotel breakfast throughout the country.
  • Ceviche -- Pacific coast ceviche (tilapia or corvina marinated in lime with cilantro, onion, and sweet pepper) is excellent in Puntarenas; the beachfront sodas are the right place to eat it.
  • Casado -- the classic Costa Rican lunch: a heaped plate of rice, beans, fried plantains, cabbage salad, and a choice of grilled fish, chicken, or beef -- a full, inexpensive meal at any soda.
  • Agua dulce with natilla -- a hot sugarcane drink served with a dollop of Costa Rican sour cream; the local version of cafe au lait and the most comforting morning drink in the country.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Manuel Antonio National Park -- guided wildlife walk and beach day; hire a local certified naturalist guide to spot sloths, monkeys, and macaws that you'd miss on your own.
2 Carara National Park and Tarcoles crocodile bridge -- combine in a half-day excursion for scarlet macaws and crocodile sightings.
3 Tortuga Island catamaran snorkel cruise -- full-day sail, snorkel, beach lunch, and open bar in the Gulf of Nicoya.
4 Rainforest zip-line and hanging bridges -- 2-3 hours in the forest canopy with a reputable eco-adventure operator.
5 White-water rafting on the Rio Savegre -- Class III-IV rapids through primary rainforest gorge; half-day trips run from operators along the Pacific coast highway.
