About Raiatea

Raiatea is the sacred heart of Polynesia — the island from which, according to oral tradition, the great migration canoes set out to settle Hawaii, New Zealand, and the eastern Pacific over a thousand years ago. It shares a lagoon with neighbouring Taha'a and is home to Marae Taputapuātea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most important ancient temple complex in all of Polynesia. Less developed than Bora Bora (which lies 30 km north-west) and largely bypassed by mass tourism, Raiatea offers exceptional diving on dramatic wall and cavern sites, pearl-farm visits, and a genuine connection to Polynesian history.

Insider Tip

Raiatea is the starting point for the most affordable bareboat yacht charters in French Polynesia — if you're a sailor travelling as a couple or small group, it's worth knowing that a half-day 'sailing experience' with a local skipper costs far less than a commercial lagoon tour and gives you the entire lagoon to explore.

Highlights
🏛
Marae Taputapuātea (UNESCO)
The most sacred and historically significant marae in Polynesia, on Raiatea's east coast — a massive basalt-slab platform where chiefs from across the Pacific once gathered for ceremonies and navigation rites. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017 and genuinely awe-inspiring.
🤿
Hammerhead Shark and Manta Ray Dives
Raiatea's Tevairoa passage and the caverns of Faaroa Bay hold some of the best diving in French Polynesia: schooling hammerhead sharks, manta rays, moray eels, and a submerged forest of black coral in the deeper passages.
🌸
Faaroa River and Botanical Canoe Tour
French Polynesia's only navigable river winds through dense jungle and vanilla plantations in a hidden valley east of Uturoa — a peaceful canoe or kayak trip with wild jungle-hen sightings and a stop at a vanilla farm.
Taha'a Lagoon and Vanilla Farm Visit
A boat tour across the shared lagoon to Raiatea's sister island Taha'a — the 'Vanilla Island' — passes through overwater bungalow resorts and pearl farms before reaching a working vanilla plantation for a guided tour and tasting.
💎
Pearl Farm Tour (Hinano Pearls)
Several pearl farms on the Raiatea and Taha'a lagoon run guided tours showing the grafting process for Tahitian black pearls, with direct sales at farm prices well below Papeete retail.
Local Food & Drink
  • Vanilla-infused everything — Raiatea and Taha'a vanilla is among the finest in the world; local restaurants incorporate it into sauces, marinades, and desserts; vanilla pods sold at the market are a perfect edible souvenir.
  • Mahi-mahi au lait de coco — pan-seared local mahi-mahi in coconut milk sauce with rice and fafa; the signature dish at Uturoa's waterfront restaurants.
  • Poisson cru with local lime — Raiatea's lime orchards produce the most fragrant citrus in French Polynesia; the local poisson cru is noticeably sharper and more aromatic than the Papeete version.
  • Uru (breadfruit) baked with coconut cream — a starchy, satisfying side dish served with most traditional meals in the Leeward Islands.
