About Saint John

Saint John sits on the Bay of Fundy, home to the highest tides on Earth — up to 50 feet — which create the surreal Reversing Falls and the wildlife-rich shores of the Fundy coast. New Brunswick's oldest city pairs a walkable uptown and a historic City Market with easy access to covered bridges, sea caves, and the dramatic rock formations of Hopewell. It's a nature-and-tides port.

Insider Tip

Everything here runs on the tides — the same spot looks completely different six hours apart, so check whether your excursion catches high or low water. The City Market is a great, free downtown stop right by the ship.

Highlights
🌊
Reversing Falls Rapids
Where the Fundy tides are so strong they force the river to flow backwards twice a day.
🪨
Hopewell Rocks
Towering "flowerpot" sea stacks you can walk among at low tide and kayak around at high tide (a longer drive).
🏛
Saint John City Market
Canada's oldest continuously operating farmers' market, under a ship's-keel wooden roof.
🦞
St. Martins & sea caves
A fishing village with covered bridges and tidal sea caves you can explore on foot at low tide.
🌲
Irving Nature Park
Coastal trails with seals, shorebirds, and Fundy views just outside the city.
Local Food & Drink
  • Bay of Fundy lobster and scallops.
  • Dulse — dried purple seaweed, a salty Maritime snack.
  • Fish chowder and a fresh-baked market samosa (a local City Market favourite).
  • New Brunswick craft beer and fiddleheads in spring.
