Sakaiminato is a compact fishing port on the Miho Peninsula in Tottori Prefecture, blessed with two outsized claims to fame: the best king crab and snow crab in Japan (the local crab fleet is one of the country's largest) and the birthplace of Shigeru Mizuki, the manga artist who created GeGeGe no Kitaro, a beloved ghost-character series that shaped generations of Japanese childhood. The city's Mizuki Shigeru Road is lined with 177 bronze yokai (spirit) statues, giving the harbor a wonderfully eccentric character alongside its fresh-off-the-boat seafood.
The Matsuba crab season (November-March) dramatically changes what's available at Sakaiminato's market — outside crab season the port shifts to other excellent seafood (shiroebi, flounder, yellowtail) but the live-crab theater is reduced. If visiting in warmer months, focus on the yokai road and museum, as they are equally worth the port call.
