About Samana

Samana is the Dominican Republic's most scenically dramatic peninsula -- a lush, mountainous finger of land projecting into the Atlantic, fringed by some of the Caribbean's most untouched beaches and backed by waterfalls and cloud-cloaked rainforest. From January through March, the Bay of Samana hosts one of the world's great whale-watching events: thousands of humpback whales congregate here to breed and calve, and it's considered the finest humpback-watching site in the entire Atlantic basin. Beyond whale season, the Samana experience is defined by the El Limon waterfall, the beaches of Las Galeras and Las Terrenas, and the extraordinary forest and cave landscapes of Los Haitises National Park.

💡
Insider Tip

If your ship calls at Samana between January 15 and March 15, rearrange your plans around the whale watching -- it's not optional. Book with one of the licensed operators (Centro de Observacion de Ballenas) from the pier before heading anywhere else; the humpbacks are the main reason Samana is on the itinerary.

Highlights
🐋
Humpback Whale Watching
Between mid-January and mid-March, thousands of North Atlantic humpback whales arrive in Samana Bay to breed and give birth -- the bay is their primary Atlantic breeding ground and the watching, run by licensed operators from the pier, is among the most spectacular wildlife experiences in the Caribbean.
💧
El Limon Waterfall
A 52-metre waterfall plunging into a natural pool in the interior forest, reached by a 45-minute horseback ride through tropical vegetation -- the ride through local rural community land and the swim in the pool below the falls together make it one of the most memorable excursions on any DR port day.
🦅
Los Haitises National Park
A protected area of dramatic limestone karst outcrops (mogotes), mangrove channels, bat-filled caves with Taino petroglyphs, and some of the most biodiverse tropical forest in the Caribbean -- accessible by boat from Samana Bay and one of the most rewarding natural excursions in the Dominican Republic.
🏖
Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island)
A small offshore island in Samana Bay with a white-sand beach, clear calm water, and enough palm shade to feel genuinely tropical -- a regular boat excursion from the pier and the postcard beach image of the DR.
🌴
Las Galeras & Las Terrenas Beaches
Las Galeras, on the eastern tip of the Samana Peninsula, is a pristine, low-key beach -- one of the least commercialized beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Las Terrenas on the north coast has a more developed village feel but outstanding beach restaurants and a lively mix of DR and European expat atmosphere.
Local Food & Drink
  • Pescado al coco -- fish cooked in coconut milk with local herbs and spices; a Samana specialty reflecting the peninsula's distinct cultural identity, served at the waterfront restaurants in town.
  • Sancocho -- the DR's thick, hearty seven-meat stew (typically chicken, pork, and beef with plantains and yuca) slow-cooked in a single pot; the ultimate Dominican comfort food found at every family restaurant.
  • Tostones con queso -- twice-fried green plantain with fried white cheese; the ideal bar snack or side dish throughout the DR.
  • Fresh tropical fruit -- roadside stands along the route to El Limon sell mangoes, pineapples, coconuts, and the local passion fruit cheaply and in season.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Humpback whale watching (January-March) -- the must-do when in season; 2-hour boat trip into Samana Bay with licensed whale-watch operators.
2 El Limon waterfall horseback ride -- 45 minutes on horseback through tropical farmland and forest to the falls, with a swim in the natural pool at the base.
3 Los Haitises National Park boat tour -- mangrove channels, Taino cave art, exotic birds, and the dramatic karst mogote landscape.
4 Cayo Levantado beach day -- boat to the offshore island for a calm beach, palm shade, and swimming in crystal-clear bay water.
5 Las Galeras beach excursion -- road trip to the peninsula's most unspoiled beach at the far eastern tip.
