Sapporo is Hokkaido's capital city and Japan's fifth-largest, a wide-grid city of European urban planning laid out in 1869 by an American adviser, now famous for its February Snow Festival, Sapporo beer, and some of Japan's finest skiing and mountain food. Ships calling at Muroran Port are 90 minutes by express bus from the city, but Muroran itself has its own dramatic coastal scenery — the Chikiu Misaki lighthouse on a volcanic headland and the striking Chiribetsu Valley. The surrounding Shiraoi area has Hokkaido's foremost Ainu cultural museum.
Noboribetsu Onsen (30 minutes north of Muroran by JR) is the single most efficient port-day stop from Muroran — the ryokan day-baths accept walk-in visitors without a room reservation, the Jigokudani volcanic valley is a short free walk from the bus stop, and you are back at the ship with time to spare without the 90-minute Sapporo commute.
