About Sapporo (Muroran)

Sapporo is Hokkaido's capital city and Japan's fifth-largest, a wide-grid city of European urban planning laid out in 1869 by an American adviser, now famous for its February Snow Festival, Sapporo beer, and some of Japan's finest skiing and mountain food. Ships calling at Muroran Port are 90 minutes by express bus from the city, but Muroran itself has its own dramatic coastal scenery — the Chikiu Misaki lighthouse on a volcanic headland and the striking Chiribetsu Valley. The surrounding Shiraoi area has Hokkaido's foremost Ainu cultural museum.

Insider Tip

Noboribetsu Onsen (30 minutes north of Muroran by JR) is the single most efficient port-day stop from Muroran — the ryokan day-baths accept walk-in visitors without a room reservation, the Jigokudani volcanic valley is a short free walk from the bus stop, and you are back at the ship with time to spare without the 90-minute Sapporo commute.

Highlights
🍺
Sapporo Beer Museum & Brewery
The iconic red-brick brewery building (1890) in central Sapporo houses Japan's only beer museum — free to enter, with a paid tasting room serving Black Label, Classic, and limited Hokkaido brews fresh from the kegs. About 15 minutes by taxi from Sapporo Station.
Odori Park & Sapporo TV Tower
The 1.5 km green axis of Odori Park runs through the center of Sapporo; the 147-metre red TV Tower at its eastern end has an observation deck with the grid-city view the Snow Festival uses as its backdrop. Walking distance from the Susukino and Tanukikoji shopping districts.
🏺
Upopoy (National Ainu Museum, Shiraoi)
Japan's national Ainu cultural museum, opened 2020 at Shiraoi on the shores of Lake Poroto (40 min by JR from Muroran) — a beautiful lakeside museum preserving Ainu language, craft, music, and ceremony in immersive galleries, with a reconstructed kotan (village) outside.
🌊
Chikiu Misaki (Cape Chikyu) Lighthouse
A dramatic promontory 20 minutes east of Muroran by taxi where a white lighthouse stands above 110-metre sea cliffs on the Muroran volcanic headland — one of Hokkaido's most photographed coastal viewpoints, clear of crowds, and walkable from the parking area.
🍜
Sapporo Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley)
The original Susukino ramen alley — a narrow lane of 17 tiny ramen shops all serving Sapporo's signature miso-based broth with corn, butter, and stir-fried bean sprouts. Open late; best as a pre-return-bus dinner in the Susukino district.
Local Food & Drink
  • Sapporo miso ramen — a rich, red-miso broth with thick wavy noodles, corn, butter, and bamboo shoots; the definitive version of Japan's most imitated regional ramen at the Susukino ramen alley.
  • Hokkaido soup curry — a Sapporo invention: a thin, spice-forward curry broth with enormous slow-cooked vegetables and fried chicken leg; served at specialist soup-curry restaurants across the city.
  • Jingisukan (Genghis Khan BBQ) — griddled Hokkaido lamb or mutton with vegetables on a dome-shaped cast-iron grill, the quintessential Hokkaido working-class meat dish; available at the Sapporo Beer Garden adjacent to the museum.
  • Hokkaido soft-serve dairy — Hokkaido milk produces Japan's richest ice cream; the melon and lavender soft-serve at Sapporo's Odori Park market stalls are superb.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Sapporo Beer Museum tasting and Jingisukan BBQ lunch at the Beer Garden — the classic Sapporo half-day within walking distance of each other.
2 Upopoy Ainu National Museum at Shiraoi — 40 min by JR from Muroran; a world-class indigenous culture museum with lakeside reconstructed village.
3 Chikiu Misaki lighthouse coastal walk — 20 min taxi from the port; Hokkaido's most dramatic sea-cliff viewpoint.
4 Sapporo city and Odori Park full-day — 90-min bus each way; TV Tower, Tanukikoji shopping arcade, soup curry lunch, and ramen alley dinner.
5 Noboribetsu Onsen day trip — 30 minutes north of Muroran; Hokkaido's most famous hot-spring resort with a volcanic 'Jigokudani' (Hell Valley) of steaming fumaroles.
