Sarande is Albania's main Riviera resort town and one of the most rewarding surprise port calls in the eastern Mediterranean — a compact promenade city squeezed between limestone mountains and a calm bay, with turquoise Ionian water that rivals anywhere in Greece. Just 18 km away, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Butrint preserves one of the best-conserved ancient Greek and Roman city sites in Europe, set inside a national park of forest and lagoon. Albania's complex and fascinating 20th-century history (Hoxha's isolationist communist regime, the bunkers still dotting every hillside) gives even a brief port visit unusual depth.
Butrint is the reason to come to Sarande — but it closes at 5pm, so work backwards from your ship's all-aboard time. The fastest option is a shared minibus (furgon) from the bus station near the port to Butrint for around 4 euros each way; taxis cost 20-25 euros round trip with waiting time and are worth it for groups.
