Seward is the southern gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, one of Alaska's most awe-inspiring landscapes -- a place where tidewater glaciers calve directly into the Gulf of Alaska, humpback whales breach alongside cruise boats, and thousands of seabirds nest on rocky sea stacks. It's also the starting point for the scenic Alaska Railroad to Anchorage, 127 miles north through mountain and forest, making it a natural start or end point for a broader Alaska journey. For a small town of 3,000, Seward packs in Exit Glacier (the only road-accessible part of Kenai Fjords NP), the Alaska SeaLife Center, and a waterfront of fishing boats, bald eagles, and clear mountain air.
Book the Kenai Fjords glacier cruise before you board your cruise ship -- the full-day tours are the most popular and sell out weeks in advance in July and August. The extra few hours to reach the outer fjords where Northwestern Glacier is still actively calving are well worth the longer day.
