A 1,700-year-old canal town of stone bridges, whitewashed merchant houses, and gondola rides 40 km west of the city centre — the most accessible ancient water town from Shanghai and a vivid contrast to the skyscraper skyline.

Local Food & Drink

Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) — Shanghai's most famous food: pleated pork dumplings filled with hot broth; eaten by biting a small hole, sipping the soup, then eating the dumpling; Din Tai Fung and Jia Jia Tang Bao are the benchmark.
Shengjianbao (pan-fried pork buns) — a Shanghai breakfast staple; thick-bottomed, crispy, and filled with pork and jelly-broth that has melted into soup; best from a morning street stall.
Hong shao rou (red-braised pork belly) — slow-braised in soy sauce, sugar, and Shaoxing wine; a Shanghai home-cooking classic found at any local restaurant (benbang cai).
