Skagway is a tiny, perfectly preserved Gold Rush town at the head of the Inside Passage, where false-front buildings and wooden boardwalks look much as they did in 1898. Its star attraction is the White Pass & Yukon Route railway, a narrow-gauge train that climbs through cliff-hugging switchbacks toward the Yukon. Ringed by towering peaks, it's the most history-rich stop on an Alaska cruise.
The White Pass railway sells out — book it well before your cruise. For the best canyon views, sit on the LEFT side heading up; conductors often have passengers switch sides for the return.
