About Suva

Suva is the capital of Fiji and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Pacific, spread across a green peninsula on Viti Levu's wet, dramatically cloudy south coast. Unlike the resort towns of the north, Suva feels like a real working city — it's the seat of Pacific regional organisations, home to the University of the South Pacific, and packed with a colourful mix of iTaukei Fijian, Indo-Fijian, and expatriate communities. The Fiji Museum, the atmospheric covered market, Thurston Gardens, and the rainforest of Colo-i-Suva are all within easy reach of the ship.

Fiji's most accessible rainforest reserve, 11 km from the city centre: jungle trails winding past waterfalls and natural swimming holes, with kingfishers and Fijian parrots calling overhead. Bring shoes you don't mind getting muddy.

A vast, chaotic, wonderful covered market where root vegetables, kava bundles, fresh coconut, and bolts of colourful masi (bark cloth) are sold side by side. The busiest market in the South Pacific — go early for the best atmosphere.

Within the forest park, a series of cold freshwater pools fed by mountain streams offer a refreshing dip after the jungle walk. Rope swings hang from overhanging trees above the lower pools.

Suva City Walking Tour
Suva retains graceful colonial-era architecture: the Government Buildings, Parliament House, and the 1904 Grand Pacific Hotel (restored to its Agatha Christie-era splendour) are all within a compact walking circuit of the waterfront.

Local Food & Drink

Duruka — the unopened flower shoot of a type of sugar cane, often cooked in coconut cream and sold at Suva market; a Fijian delicacy unlike anything found elsewhere.
Palusami (Fijian version) — taro leaves stuffed with onion and coconut cream, baked in foil; served at most Fijian restaurants as a side dish.
Indian roti and curry — Suva's many Indo-Fijian restaurants serve excellent dhal, aloo, and goat curries with freshly made roti at bargain prices.
Cassava chips — thick-cut cassava fried golden and served with a chilli dip; sold from market stalls and takeaway counters throughout the city.
