About Tauranga

Tauranga is the fastest-growing city in New Zealand and the country's busiest export port -- but for cruise passengers it is best known as the gateway to two of New Zealand's most iconic experiences: the Shire movie set of Hobbiton in Matamata (90 minutes south-west), and the explosive geothermal heartland of Rotorua (90 minutes south). Ships dock at the Port of Tauranga, and a short ride or ferry connects to the lively waterfront and the boutique shopping streets of the CBD. The nearby Mount Maunganui suburb (The Mount) offers a perfect volcanic cone to climb and a beautiful ocean beach strip that is the surf capital of New Zealand.

💡
Insider Tip

Hobbiton sells out on cruise-ship days weeks in advance -- if Hobbiton is your priority, book online the moment your itinerary is confirmed; late bookers find only the last-session times left, which can conflict with tender curfews.

Highlights
🧙
Hobbiton Movie Set, Matamata
The permanent real-world Shire -- the hobbit holes, the Mill, the Green Dragon Inn, and the Party Tree of Bag End were built on a working sheep farm in Matamata and remain after The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films; guided 2-hour tours depart daily, 90 minutes from Tauranga.
🌋
Rotorua Geothermal & Maori Culture
Te Puia (the national Maori Arts and Crafts Institute) sits beside Whakarewarewa geothermal valley -- boiling mud pools, Pohutu Geyser (the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere), kapa haka performance, and master carvers and weavers at work. 85 km from Tauranga.
Mount Maunganui -- Summit Track
A 3 km circular track climbs 232m to the top of Mauao (The Mount) -- a perfectly conical extinct volcanic plug at the entrance to Tauranga Harbour -- with 360-degree views of the Bay of Plenty, White Island, and the Coromandel Peninsula.
🏄
Mount Maunganui Beach Strip
A 3 km surf beach at the foot of Mauao -- the best surf beach in the Bay of Plenty, with safe swimming at the northern end, a beachside hot salt-water pool complex, and the cafes and boutique shops of Mount Maunganui village behind the dunes.
🥝
Kiwifruit Country Tour
The Bay of Plenty grows 80% of New Zealand's kiwifruit -- guided orchard tours depart Tauranga in season (March-July for Hayward green, March-May for SunGold), including a walk through the vines, a packing-shed demonstration, and a tasting.
Local Food & Drink
  • Bay of Plenty kiwifruit -- the gold and green kiwifruit grown in the alluvial flats around Tauranga and Te Puke are the freshest and cheapest in New Zealand; roadside stalls on SH2 sell them by the tray in season.
  • Rotorua hangi -- a traditional earth-oven feast of chicken, lamb, pork, and vegetables slow-cooked in hot volcanic ground; included in the cultural evening package at Tamaki Maori Village or Te Puia.
  • Mount Maunganui fish tacos and craft beer -- the best casual meal in the Mount, with fresh local fish and tables on a beach-facing deck.
  • Hot mineral pool and a flat white -- the Mount Maunganui Saltwater Pools (heated by the sea) and the Astro cafe espresso combine into the quintessential Mount morning ritual.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Hobbiton full-day tour -- 90 minutes to Matamata, 2-hour guided Shire walk, Green Dragon Inn beer, and return; book well in advance as it sells out on cruise days.
2 Rotorua geothermal and Maori culture -- Te Puia, Whakarewarewa, Pohutu Geyser, and a carved meeting house tour (85 km from Tauranga).
3 Mount Maunganui summit climb and beach swim -- 3 km loop track to the summit, then a swim and coffee in the Mount village below.
4 White Island (Whakaari) scenic helicopter flight -- a 30-minute flight to New Zealand's most active marine volcano; crater walk tours available on a limited basis (check current access before booking).
5 Kiwifruit orchard tour and Te Puke -- SunGold kiwifruit picking experience with orchard guide (March-May season).
