Tokyo is a dazzling collision of the ultramodern and the traditional — neon districts and serene shrines, Michelin sushi and street ramen, all on a colossal scale. Most cruise ships dock at Yokohama (Japan's elegant second city and historic foreign port) or central Tokyo, putting Senso-ji's temple, the Shibuya scramble, and the imperial heart within reach. A long day barely scratches the surface.
Distances are huge, so pick one or two areas rather than chasing the whole city. If you dock in Yokohama, factor ~45 minutes each way into central Tokyo — or enjoy Yokohama itself, which is lovely. A prepaid Suica/Pasmo card makes the trains painless.
