About Trondheim

Trondheim, Norway's third city and medieval capital, clusters around a horseshoe harbour guarded by the remarkable Nidaros Cathedral — the world's northernmost Gothic cathedral and the traditional coronation church of Norwegian kings. Colourful wooden warehouses overhang the River Nidelva on stilts, a charming Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro) frames the scene in rust-red ironwork, and an accessible path leads up to Kristiansten Fortress for sweeping views over the city and fjord. Trondheim is polished but unpretentious: a city that wears its 1,000 years of history lightly.

Insider Tip

Nidaros Cathedral opens early and fills with tour groups by mid-morning — arrive within the first 30 minutes of port arrival for a near-empty nave and the best light on the west facade's carvings.

Highlights
Nidaros Cathedral
The largest medieval building in Scandinavia and the only Gothic cathedral built over a Viking-age saint's shrine (St Olav). The west facade's sculptural programme is extraordinary; guided tours include the Crown Jewels exhibition in the Archbishop's Palace next door.
🌉
Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge) & Bakklandet
Trondheim's most photographed viewpoint: the red-painted timber bridge arching over the River Nidelva with the colourful Brygge warehouses reflected in the water below. The Bakklandet district on the far bank is a maze of wooden houses, independent coffee shops, and vintage stores.
🏰
Kristiansten Fortress
A short steep climb up from the city centre brings you to this 17th-century fortress with arguably the finest view over Trondheim — cathedral, fjord, and the green Trondelag hills behind. Free to walk around the walls.
🛕
Archbishop's Palace & Royal Regalia
The medieval Archbishop's Palace beside Nidaros Cathedral is Scandinavia's oldest secular stone building and now houses two museums: the coronation regalia (crowns, orbs, sceptres) and a superb medieval stone sculpture collection.
🚴
Trampe Bicycle Lift & City Cycle
Trondheim's famous Trampe bicycle lift carries riders up the steep Brubakken hill on a moving footrest — a genuine engineering quirk and a fun way to reach Kristiansten Fortress. City bikes are available across the centre.
Local Food & Drink
  • Bacalao trondheimsk — Trondheim's own preparation of salted cod, slow-cooked with tomatoes, olives, and capers; a city staple with Iberian origins from the fish-trading era.
  • Lamb dishes from Trondelag — the inland valleys supply superb quality lamb; look for lamb rib (pinnekjott) or chops at the Ravnkloa fish market.
  • Sveler — thick, slightly sweet Norwegian pancakes sold from street stalls and cafes near the market square, best eaten warm with sour cream.
  • Cloudberry (multe) jam — served on waffles or as a dessert topping throughout Norway; the golden Arctic berry has a honeyed, floral tartness unlike anything grown further south.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Nidaros Cathedral and Archbishop's Palace guided tour — the heart of Trondheim, about 2 hours including the Crown Jewels.
2 Bakklandet district walk and Old Town Bridge — a self-guided meander through the most picturesque quarter, ending with coffee and a waffle at a riverside cafe.
3 Kristiansten Fortress climb and city panorama — independent 30-minute walk from the centre.
4 Ringve Music Museum — housed in a Baroque manor on a peninsula east of the centre, with a remarkable collection of historic instruments from around the world.
5 Day trip to Stiklestad — site of the 1030 Battle of Stiklestad where St Olav died, operated as a full living history museum about 100 km north.
