About Ushuaia

Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world — a remote, rugged town at the tip of Tierra del Fuego where the Andes finally plunge into the Beagle Channel, and Antarctica begins just 1,000 kilometres across the Drake Passage. Ships dock in a spectacular bowl of jagged snow-capped peaks, and the city wears its 'End of the World' identity with pride — there is an 'End of the World' post office, train, museum, and lighthouse, and the frontier atmosphere is entirely genuine. Beyond the marketing, Ushuaia delivers extraordinary nature: the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego National Park, and glacier hikes are all within reach of even a short port day.

💡
Insider Tip

Beagle Channel catamaran operators depart directly from a pier in front of the main cruise terminal — you can book when you walk off the ship. Arrive at the tour kiosk at 7:30am when doors open and you'll almost certainly get on the first 9am departure, even without a pre-booking. Boats run every 2 hours in season and are rarely cancelled due to wind.

Highlights
🌊
Beagle Channel Navigation
A catamaran cruise along the same channel Charles Darwin surveyed in 1832, passing sea lion and cormorant colonies on rocky islands, the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse (often misidentified as the "End of the World" lighthouse), and occasional Magellanic penguins. Departures from the port; trips run 2.5–3 hours.
🏔
Tierra del Fuego National Park
Argentina's only coastal national park, 12km west of the city: beech forest, peat bogs, beaver ponds (introduced and now invasive), and the shore of the Beagle Channel at the end of Ruta Nacional 3 — literally the last road in Argentina. Signposted trails begin at the park entrance.
🚂
End of the World Train (Tren del Fin del Mundo)
A narrow-gauge steam railway through Tierra del Fuego National Park following the route once used by prisoners to haul timber for the penal colony. Short but atmospheric; departs from a station outside the city and drops you at the national park entrance.
🏔
Martial Glacier & Chairlift
A chairlift rises above Ushuaia to a 1,050m viewpoint where a glacier still clings to the mountain — the trek from the top of the lift to the glacier face takes 45 minutes and delivers a panorama over the Beagle Channel, the city, and the Chilean islands beyond.
🐧
Isla Martillo Penguin Walk
A Zodiac landing on a small island in the Beagle Channel home to a mixed Magellanic and (rarely) Gentoo penguin colony — small-group tours wade ashore and walk among the birds at close range. Book well in advance; capacity is strictly limited.
Local Food & Drink
  • Centolla (southern king crab) — Ushuaia's defining delicacy: the cold Beagle Channel produces some of the finest king crab on the planet. Order it steamed at a port-side restaurant.
  • Trucha patagónica — Patagonian trout raised in the crystal rivers of Tierra del Fuego, grilled or poached and served with local herbs.
  • Lamb stew (estofado de cordero) — the austral lamb of Tierra del Fuego is grass-fed and intensely flavoured; a warming stew suits the cold climate perfectly.
  • Submarino (hot chocolate with a chocolate bar) — an Argentine staple perfect in Ushuaia's near-constant cold: a tall glass of hot milk with a bar of dark chocolate dipped in to melt. Order in any café on San Martín Avenue.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Beagle Channel catamaran with sea lion island stop — the essential Ushuaia experience; book directly at the port or through a tour operator on arrival.
2 Tierra del Fuego National Park hike — a self-guided or guided walk in the park, reaching the end of Ruta 3 (the southernmost point of the Pan-American Highway).
3 End of the World Train + national park combo — departs near Ushuaia, travels through the park, and can be combined with a park walk on the way back.
4 Glacier trekking on Cerro Martial — a guided crampons-and-ice-axe hike on the Martial glacier above the city; suitable for beginners with a guide.
5 Isla Martillo penguin landing (Oct–March) — a Zodiac excursion to walk among breeding Magellanic and Gentoo penguins; limited capacity means advance booking is essential.
