Waterford, Ireland's oldest city, was founded by Vikings in 914 AD and remained the most important trading city in medieval Ireland — a heritage still visible in the Viking Triangle, where three exceptional museums cluster within walking distance of each other. The city is also home to House of Waterford Crystal, the world-famous glassworks where master craftspeople hand-cut and hand-blow the iconic crystal in the original Waterford tradition. Ships call at Dunmore East, a picturesque fishing harbour 15 km from the city, adding a pretty thatched-cottage village to the day's itinerary.
The House of Waterford Crystal factory tour is free and runs from 9am — go first thing, before the showroom fills with other cruise passengers. The master blowers and cutters work at their best in the cool of the morning, and you'll get much closer to the demonstration benches with fewer people around.
