Progreso is a low-key Mexican beach town on the Gulf of Mexico that serves as the cruise gateway to the magnificent Maya heartland of the Yucatan -- Merida, Chichen Itza, and Uxmal are all accessible in a single port day. The pier itself stretches an improbable 6 kilometres into the gulf (one of the longest in the world) to reach water deep enough for cruise ships, so arrival is a scenic bus ride along the causeway before you even hit land. The beach at Progreso is a mile of quiet, relatively uncrowded Gulf sand -- a low-key alternative to the ruins-focused day if all you want is a swim.
Chichen Itza opens at 8am and the tour buses from Cancun and Playa del Carmen arrive from 10:30am -- if your ship docks by 8am and you take a private car or early excursion directly there, you'll have the El Castillo pyramid nearly to yourself for the first 90 minutes. The midday heat and crowds are brutal; the early morning visit is an entirely different experience.
