About Grundarfjordur

Grundarfjordur is a tiny Icelandic fishing town on the Snaefellsnes peninsula whose harbour is dominated by one of the most perfectly shaped mountains on earth: Kirkjufell (Church Mountain), a 463-metre pyramidal peak whose reflection shimmers in the twin waterfalls of Kirkjufellsfoss below. The peninsula is sometimes called 'Iceland in miniature' — its 90-kilometre length packs in volcanoes, lava fields, a glacier, bird cliffs, and black sand beaches — and Grundarfjordur sits at the peninsula's midpoint, making it the ideal base for exploring all of it. The mountain is also widely recognised as the Arrow Head peak from Game of Thrones.

💡
Insider Tip

Kirkjufellsfoss photos are best in the first and last hour of daylight — avoid the mid-morning rush when multiple ship tenders arrive simultaneously. The east angle from the road north of the falls shows Kirkjufell's full arrowhead profile; the classic composition with both waterfalls in frame is from the west side, about 200 metres from the dock.

Highlights
Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss
The 463-metre arrowhead peak of Kirkjufell is Iceland's most photographed mountain — accessible in a 10-minute walk from the dock, with Kirkjufellsfoss's twin braided waterfalls as a foreground. A moderate trail leads to the summit for those wanting a 3-4 hour hike with extraordinary 360-degree Snaefellsnes views.
🌋
Snaefellsjokull Glacier & National Park
Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' began at Snaefellsjokull, a glacier-capped stratovolcano at the peninsula's tip. The national park surrounding it contains lava tubes, sea caves, and dramatic black basalt coastline. It's 60 km from Grundarfjordur and reachable by organised tour.
🐦
Olafsvik Puffin Cliffs & Seal Beaches
The bird cliffs around the Snaefellsnes peninsula harbour large Atlantic puffin colonies during summer (May-August). Olafsvik, 15 km from Grundarfjordur, is the closest town for viewing; grey seals haul out on beaches along the south shore.
🌊
Djupalonssandur Black Sand Beach
On the wild Atlantic-facing south shore of the peninsula, Djupalonssandur is a hauntingly beautiful beach of round black pebbles and the rusted wreckage of a British trawler — a sombre and dramatic landscape unlike any other in Iceland.
🌅
Berserkjahraun Lava Field
Between Grundarfjordur and the southern shore, the Berserkjahraun lava field covers 11 km squared in a surreal tumble of mossy lava formations formed around 4,000 years ago — a short stop on any Snaefellsnes circuit reveals Iceland's volcanic geology at its most accessible.
Local Food & Drink
  • Langoustine (lobster) soup — Iceland's langoustine tails are among the sweetest in the North Atlantic; a bisque-style soup is served at the few restaurants on the peninsula.
  • Skyr — thick, cultured dairy product similar to strained yoghurt but lower in fat; available in every Icelandic convenience store and served with crowberry jam in local cafes.
  • Hakarl (fermented Greenlandic shark) — a small cube as a one-time tasting experience is a genuine Icelandic rite of passage; the surrounding area has a tradition of hakarl production.
  • Pylsur (Icelandic hot dog) — the national fast food, made with lamb and pork, topped with fried onion, raw onion, sweet mustard, and remoulade; the small filling station at Grundarfjordur stocks them.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Kirkjufell summit hike — 3-4 hour return trail with extraordinary 360-degree Snaefellsnes views (moderate difficulty; hiking shoes required).
2 Snaefellsjokull National Park and glacier tour — full peninsula circuit by coach or 4WD including Djupalonssandur, Vatnshellir lava tube, and Arnarstapi sea cliffs.
3 Whale and puffin watching boat tour from Olafsvik — humpback whales, minkes, and seabirds in the open sea north of the peninsula (May-September).
4 Northern lights photography tour (September-March) — Grundarfjordur's dark skies and Kirkjufell as a foreground make this one of Iceland's best aurora locations.
5 Berserkjahraun lava field and Ytri-Tunga seal beach self-drive — a half-day coastal loop requiring only a compact rental car.
