About Rockland

Rockland is a working Maine fishing port that has evolved into one of New England's most charming small-city destinations, anchored by the world-class Farnsworth Art Museum and surrounded by some of the most storied lighthouses on the Atlantic coast. Ships dock right on the harbor where lobster boats still unload their catch, the smell of brine is real, and a Main Street of independent bookshops, galleries, and lobster shacks is a short walk away. It's a genuine, unfussy Maine town -- an ideal antidote to overrun tourist ports.

💡
Insider Tip

If your ship is in on the first weekend of August, the Maine Lobster Festival happens right on the Rockland waterfront -- tens of thousands of pounds of lobster are cooked in the world's largest lobster cooker and it's one of the most authentically local food events on the New England cruise circuit.

Highlights
🎨
Farnsworth Art Museum
One of the finest regional art museums in the US, with the world's largest collection of Wyeth family works -- Andrew, N.C., and Jamie -- plus American masters from Winslow Homer to Louise Nevelson, who grew up in Rockland.
🎮
Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse
A mile-long granite breakwater walk leads to a classic New England lighthouse at the harbor entrance -- the walk itself, with sailboats and lobster boats passing on either side, is one of the most satisfying 20 minutes of any port day in Maine.
🦞
Lobster & Waterfront Dining
The Lobster Trap (right on the working waterfront), Archer's on the Pier, and McLoon's Lobster Shack across the harbor all serve Maine lobster the right way -- whole, steamed, with a paper bib and a ramekin of drawn butter.
💡
Owls Head Transportation Museum
Just 3 miles south of the port, this museum has one of the finest collections of antique aircraft, automobiles, and motorcycles in New England -- a good pick for families or anyone who wants something a little different from a lighthouse walk.
🖼
Main Street Galleries & Maine Lobster Festival
Rockland's Main Street arts district has more galleries per capita than almost any other town in Maine -- if your itinerary falls on the first weekend of August, the Maine Lobster Festival happens right on the waterfront.
Local Food & Drink
  • Maine lobster roll -- the classic: chilled claw and knuckle meat, mayo, celery salt, toasted top-split roll. McLoon's Lobster Shack across the harbor does a definitive version; get there by water taxi.
  • Lobster stew -- the traditional Maine preparation: chunks of fresh lobster simmered in a butter and cream broth, served with oyster crackers. Old-school diners on Main Street do it best.
  • Wild blueberry pie -- Maine's wild blueberries are smaller and more intensely flavoured than farmed varieties; a slice from the Rock City Cafe or any local bakery is the ideal dessert.
  • Chowder -- New England clam chowder (cream-based, never tomato) made with fresh Penobscot Bay clams is served at every restaurant in town and is reliably excellent.
Shore Excursion Ideas
1 Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse walk -- a 2-mile round-trip walk along the granite causeway to the 1902 lighthouse, with panoramic harbor views.
2 Farnsworth Art Museum -- Andrew Wyeth's 'Christina's World' study and the world's largest Wyeth collection; half a day is ideal.
3 Windjammer sailing cruise -- classic two- or three-masted schooners depart from Rockland Harbor for 2-hour day sails along the Penobscot Bay coast.
4 Marshall Point Lighthouse & Port Clyde -- the lighthouse made famous by Forrest Gump is 15 miles south; pair it with a lobster roll in the tiny fishing village of Port Clyde.
5 Owls Head Transportation Museum -- antique aircraft and automobile collection, 15 minutes from the pier by taxi.
