Santorini is the postcard of the Greek islands — whitewashed villages and blue domes clinging to cliffs above a flooded volcanic caldera. Ships anchor in the caldera and tender to the old port, from which a cable car (or a switchback donkey path) climbs to Fira. Sunsets in Oia, black-sand beaches, and crisp Assyrtiko wine make it many cruisers' favorite Mediterranean stop. It's stunning — and busy, so timing matters.
The cable car from the old port backs up badly when several ships are in — go up early, or take a ship excursion that uses the road by bus. And don't ride the donkeys; the cable car is faster and kinder.
